Project In Progress
Building the Future of
Conservation in El Darién
Art . Discovery . Sustainable Infrastructure.
Together, we are building the El Darién Ranger Station Project. A permanent base for protection, research, and discovery in one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth.
WHY EL DARIÉN MATTERS
Fieldwork. Protection. Discovery
The El Darién region of Colombia remains one of the most ecologically significant and least explored rainforest ecosystems in the Americas.
Within the Reserva Natural Sabinaria, conservation teams are protecting:
- Over 1,180 hectares of critical habitat
- 30 threatened species
- 100 endemic species
- Newly documented botanical discoveries — including a previously unrecorded palm species identified by rangers
Some forests are too important to lose.
The El Darién Ranger Station Project represents something rare,
Together, we are not just documenting biodiversity. We are building the systems that allow it to survive. Support the mission.
Discovery.
Protection.
Infrastructure.
Legacy.
THE THREE PILLARS
Three distinct forces. One shared mission.
Salvamontes protects the land, Valentina brings visibility through art, and Beyond The Urban builds the systems that make long-term conservation possible.
Salvamontes
Protection on the Ground
They are the boots on the ground.
Salvamontes manages five nature reserves in Colombia, protecting biodiversity through direct action.
- Over 1,180 hectares of critical habitat
- 30 threatened species
- 100 endemic species
- Newly documented botanical discoveries — including a previously unrecorded palm species identified by rangers
The El Darién Ranger Station Project gives them what they need most:
A permanent, safe base for operations.
Valentina Nieto Fernández
Artist & Conservationist
Art becomes protection made visible.
Valentina translates the chaotic beauty of the jungle into powerful visual narratives.
Through field sketching, scientific illustration, and community engagement, she gives visibility to what is often unseen.
Her artwork from the expedition:
- Documents biodiversity
- Humanizes conservation
- Connects global audiences to the rainforest
- Helps fund the Ranger Station Project
All donors receive a high-resolution digital artwork from the expedition collection.
Physical prints are available regionally.
Beyond The Urban
Building the Systems Behind the Station
Conservation needs infrastructure.
Beyond The Urban is helping design the sustainable systems that will support the El Darién Ranger Station and make long-term field operations possible.
The current planning includes:
- Renewable solar energy infrastructure
- Off-grid power storage solutions
- Long-term sustainable water planning
This work helps ensure the ranger station can operate safely, independently, and year-round in a remote environment.
The El Darién
ranger station project
The Ranger Station will serve as:
- A safe base for conservation rangers
- A hub for researchers and scientists
- A meeting point for environmental education
- A launching point for biodiversity expeditions
The future of biodiversity depends on deliberate action taken today. With collective support, we can safeguard habitats, empower rangers, and ensure newly discovered species are protected for generations to come.
The Ranger Cabin Project
Deep within El Darién, one of the most biologically rich and fragile rainforest regions on Earth, this project supports the design of a small off-grid ranger hut that will act as a guard post and operational base for rangers protecting the surrounding forest.
More than a structure, it is a piece of essential conservation infrastructure designed to support long-term protection of a living ecosystem.
The cabin is designed to function in a remote environment, giving rangers a safer and more practical base from which to monitor, protect, and support the surrounding rainforest.
Architectural design contributed by EcoHouse.
Challenges Behind the Design
Designing a resilient off-grid cabin for a remote jungle environment meant solving several practical and environmental challenges.
Humid jungle climate
Constant humidity, heavy rainfall, and biological growth required materials and construction methods that could resist corrosion, mold, and moisture intrusion.
Material sourcing
Remote conditions limited what could realistically be sourced and transported, especially for solar equipment, insulated panels, and corrosion-resistant hardware.
Off-grid energy integration
The cabin was designed to operate independently using solar power, with panels, batteries, and inverters integrated safely into a compact footprint.
Durability and simplicity
The structure needed to be practical to build in a remote environment while remaining strong enough to withstand tropical conditions over time.
Why It Matters
By giving rangers a safe and functional base in the field, this project helps protect wildlife, ecosystems, and habitats that cannot be replaced once lost.
It supports the people working on the front lines of conservation and strengthens the infrastructure needed to protect the rainforest over the long term.
Even a modest structure can play a meaningful role in protecting one of the world’s most important forest ecosystems.
How You Can Support
We stand united in the belief that protection begins with action.
The El Darién rainforest is more than a landscape. It is a living system of rare species, fragile ecosystems, and irreplaceable discoveries. What happens here matters far beyond its borders.
Together, we are building something lasting. Not just a structure, but a foundation for protection, research, and resilience.
