How We Score & Test Products
Beyond the Urban participates in affiliate programs with brands like Bluetti, EcoFlow, and others. When you buy through our links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. These commissions will never influence our scores, rankings, or recommendations. We only feature products we’d buy ourselves, and we do not accept paid placements or manufacturer sponsorships.
This independence matters: it means you can trust that a lower-scoring product isn’t there to push you toward a higher-commission alternative.
The BTU Score: When and Why We Use It
Our goal: Trustworthy, clear product information through comparison.
We publish three types of content:
- Single Product Reviews — We evaluate products using our Five Pillars and provide a plain-English verdict. No numeric score.
- BTU Top 10 Guides — Rankings with a BTU Score (out of 100) for each product to make comparisons easy.
- BTU VS Head-to-Heads — Direct comparisons with BTU Scores to show exactly how two products stack up.
Why scores on some pages and not others? Numbers are useful for comparing similar products side-by-side. For single reviews, a written verdict gives you better context than a number in isolation.
Click any BTU Score to see a radar chart showing how each category contributed to the rating, with sources and notes. Manufacturer claims are labeled; third-party tests and field data are cited.
The Five Pillars of Product Evaluation
Each pillar is worth 20 points (totaling 100):
- Performance & Efficiency (20 points)
How well does it do the job versus claims? Does it deliver the promised output, runtime, or capacity under real-world conditions?
- Reliability & Durability (20 points)
Materials, build quality, and resistance to wear, weather, or environmental stress. Will it hold up over years of use?
- Support, Warranty & Service (20 points)
Warranty terms, access to service or RMA, manufacturer responsiveness. What happens when something goes wrong?
- Value & Total Cost (20 points)
Price versus capability, long-term running costs, ecosystem compatibility. Are you getting what you pay for?
- User Experience & Satisfaction (20 points)
Setup ease, usability, documentation quality, and verified feedback from real owners and installers.
Note: In rare cases, we may shift up to ±5 points between pillars (still totaling 100) to reflect a product’s unique strengths or weaknesses. Any adjustment will be noted on the product page.
How We Calculate Scores
Our analysts gather:
- Independent test data (third-party labs, field tests)
- Manufacturer specifications (labeled as such)
- Verified user feedback (confirmed purchases, installer reports)
Each metric is normalized on a 0–10 scale within its category, then multiplied by that category’s weighting. The combined result produces the final BTU Score out of 100 (rounded to whole numbers).
We re-review products at least quarterly or when new models are released. Every product page shows a “Last reviewed” date.
What Matters Most to Us
