What can a 1000W, 2000W or 3000W portable power station actually run?

A 1000W portable power station handles a laptop, router, lights and phone charging comfortably, plus a DC fridge. At 2000W you can add a domestic fridge-freezer, a microwave in short bursts and most power tools. A 3000W unit is the first tier that runs a standard UK kettle without tripping. Bear in mind the wattage figure is the inverter, not the battery: a 2000W unit with a 1 kWh battery runs a 2000W load for about 25 minutes.

Can you charge a portable power station with a solar panel?

Yes, through the DC input, but the panel has to sit inside the unit’s voltage window or it won’t charge at all. A well-angled 400W portable panel yields roughly 1 to 1.6 kWh a day in southern EU summer, and considerably less in a northern winter. Check the maximum solar input before buying panels, since a unit capped at 100W will refill slowly no matter how many watts you connect.

Which portable power station is best for camping?

For camping, weight matters more than capacity. A 500 to 1,000Wh unit in the 5 to 10 kg range covers lights, phone charging, a laptop and a 12V cool box for a weekend. Anything above 1,500Wh is generally too heavy to carry from the car to the pitch, and you’ll leave it in the boot.

What size portable power station do I need?

Work out your watt-hours before you look at any product. List your essentials, multiply each by the hours you need it, then add 15% for conversion losses. A household running fridge, router, lights and a laptop uses roughly 1.6 kWh a day, so a 2 kWh unit covers about 24 hours of basics. Then check the inverter separately: it decides what you can start, not how long it lasts.
